In any case, regarding gay and lesbian perceivability, they felt that 21st century TV has more pictures of gays and lesbians to browse than what they had as youngsters during the 70s and 80s. Business morals manages the degree and degree of ethical quality to be utilized in business (George Zoe, 2010). Ethics, measures, qualities and morals have getting progressively mind boggling in the current present day society and the idea of absolutes is removed by vagueness. According to Pitt (2007), Human Relations Management is worried about an assortment of moral issues to be managed for settling on choices identified with organizations. Prior to settling on the choices, the different choices taking into account the necessities of the business must be checked and their consequences for the lives of the representatives must be thought of. These days the connection among morals and HRM is turning into a significant issue to be dealt wit h. A huge defining moment has been experienced by morals and Human Resource Management. The business morals primarily put consideration on the social and environmental duties of the organizations inside the general public. Morals are presently getting one of the most significant inner worries for the organizations. Beforehand, the interests of the workers were not mulled over however now it has gotten one of the primary obligations of the organization to morally deal with its HR (Christian Andra, 2009). Presently its the time of moral initiative. Demonstrations of its workers towards a business point of view to his ethical character is a litmus test. Relationship among business and its representatives depends on business contract. The guideline of moral choice is trailed by a moral association for recruiting imminent workers. According to this rule an association should just recruit an individual who is relied upon to contribute the most extreme towards expanding the drawn out estimation of the business (Glenn, 2001). As indicated by this standard, factors like s exual orientation, age, nationality and religion are not applicable for employing an individual. The moral issues which are reflected for the situation are: Security and wellbeing: Much of the work in the enterprises and organizations is unsafe. This is a direct result of the utilization of substantial innovation. These days there is a lot of utilization of hardware and high temperature based creation forms. Likewise, there is more reliance on synthetic mixes. Every one of these viewpoints increment wounds, ailments and mishaps in the working environment. For example, the activity of a matador or bomb removal master (De Cieri Kramar, 2008). New wellsprings of mishaps and sicknesses are expanding step by step. Hazard is available in each activity yet its recurrence contrasts from occupation to work. Up close and personal morals: These sorts of morals emerge because of human component in the exercises in the work environment. No work is conceivable without representatives. Corporate strategy morals: The utilization of more innovation in the working environment has supplanted the work in the work environment. This has made many people jobless. The administrators are liable for making arrangements and their effective usage. The moral substance of these strategies has enormous effect all through the organization. It ought to be with the end goal that it very well may have the option to impart right signs to each individual in the organization (Shuttleworth, 2004). Worker Relations: Its the obligation of the HR supervisor to keep up objectivity in employing, discipline, advancement, preparing, maintenance, end and remuneration (Ken Joanne, 2010). This lies at the center of HR. HR should make it sure that the organization strategies ought to follow hostile to segregation governing body and polices of the uprightness of execution surveys to ensure that the assessment procedure stays reasonable with all the occupations (Ken Joanne, 2010). Correspondence: Another obligation of the HR Department is to keep educated everybody in the association on identifying with the different lawful and moral issues. HR plans different correspondence vehicles to instruct workers with respect to the companys code of morals and no-resilience strategies, for example, archives, workshops, and casual gatherings (Hughes Bozionelos, 2007). Increment in rivalry, locally or all inclusive, need that associations ought to be progressively versatile, adaptable, light-footed, and client centered to succeed (Markiewicz, 2007). And with this adjustment in the condition the human asset proficient should be a key accomplice, a worker support or advocate and besides, a change guide inside the association. Woods (2009) recommends that so as to succeed a business driven HR work with a careful comprehension of the associations huge picture might be increasingly critical to have the option to impact choices and policies. In general, todays hum an asset supervisors center is around key staff maintenance and creating ability (Teasdale, 2006). A late examination (Grove 2009) found that human asset experts, mentors, advocates, tutors, and progression organizers will assist with spurring associations individuals and their loyalty. Human Resources Manager will likewise advance and battle for values, morals, convictions, and otherworldliness inside their associations in the administration of work environment decent variety, explicitly. Weakness and hazard: Another moral issue that is delineated for the situation is instability and hazard present in the activity. This has emerged on account of the adjustments in the full scale financial condition and mass un-business (Makin Winder, 2009). This happens on account of business rebuilding and stripping out of the expenses because of excess, redistributing, unexpected agreements and frameworks of remunerations in the work (Grawitch, Trares Kohler, 2007).ã‚â Another dangerous component of the move to more serious hazard and frailty for laborers is that what's going on when different partners need to follow up on a similar protection from chance (Rodney, Matrina Anne, 2008). Without a doubt, a key component of monetary life lately has been an exchange of hazard from the individuals who fund business for example banks, institutional financial specialists, investors, citizens and the Treasury to those in beneficial business (Teasdale, 2006). The good inquiry here is whether this move is reasonable, or perfect with the guidelines of distributive justice. It could be proposed that the exchange is out of line in light of the fact that the speculators are in a more grounded position to hazard sharing by workers and this has occurred, roughly, it is the misuse of the adjustment in the haggling power by the most grounded party in modern relations (Teasdale, 2006). Observation and control: It is major moral concern nowadays. The privilege of the utilizing office to go into the subjectivity of the laborer to control and control, is taken for ensured (Pitt, 2007). Whether the utilization of psychometric tests for determination or advancement of representatives, culture change programs that look to challenge suspicions at work or ability based HRM, which tries to advance complianceã‚â with perspectives and conduct, the supposition that will be that it is legitimate for the business to illegal enter laborers autonomy. Such wrongdoing will never be finished, however the pattern for a huge complex HRM is to attack protection of representatives. While new types of work association can be compelling in expanding efficiency, yet conceivable antagonistic impacts on the government assistance of laborers ought to be viewed as while assessing these activities (Christian Andra, 2009). A wide scope of human relations the board exercises is worried about different moral issues, both with respect to upper-level for the executives of business and the executives choices of low-level in regards to treatment of the individual workers (Winstanley, Woodall Heery, 1996).ã‚â This can be pulverizing to singular representatives and the networks in which they live. Managing choices must be actually done by considering all the elements, including social obligation just as investor concerns.ã‚â HR director ought to consider different choices for business needs and take the choice that is best for organization and representatives just as it will have an im

White Privilege Essay Example for Free

White Privilege Essay In Peggy McIntosh’s article â€Å"White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible backpack† we see definite instances of how white individuals are amazingly advantaged in manners that individuals of different races may never comprehend. Despite the fact that occasionally we don't understand this is occurring it has been believed to be valid in numerous things from the beginning of time and on the planet today. One of the pieces of this article got my attention and made me think a piece was the rundown of 26 white benefits that McIntosh expounded on in her article. This rundown was very enlightening and made me figure what I could put towards myself on this rundown. Despite the fact that I was conceived in a little unique time that McIntosh was I was moderately mindful that as a white male I was brought into the world with various benefits that accompanied the shade of my skin as well as by my sex, anyway this rundown made me understand and see a portion of the upsides of my skin that I customarily investigate. A genuine model that I could use previously, I can’t state it is so natural presently, is number 17 I can censure our administration and discussion about the amount I dread its approaches and conduct without being viewed as a social outcast. Before the appointment of Obama I could without much of a stretch reprimand my administration and nobody would truly allow me a second look about it, however I do need to state that now in the event that I scrutinize my administration I get called a supremacist, so now I sort of observe better how those of an alternate race felt when they censured our legislature and got out about it. One thing without a doubt that I do need to state about this article is I could tell that this article was composed a decent time prior. A considerable lot of the things expressed in the rundown I felt were somewhat obsolete particularly the focuses that were looking at seeing primarily individuals of the white race in media or ads. Truly there was a point in time where this was extremely obvious yet I feel like the world is improving occupation at speaking to something beyond one race with regards to commercials or media. In jean-Paul Sartre’s â€Å"Anti-Semite and the Jew we get familiar with a ton about how he by and by feels about Anti-Semites and what his depiction of an Anti-Semite is. Hostile to Semitism is essentially the disdain of somebody who is Jewish. Sartre accepts that is the Jew didn't exist that the counter Semite would design him so they would have somebody to abhor. Hostile to Semitism is something that was based more with the Nazi’s and Hitler. As I would like to think I don’t truly consider it to be a lot of now however I can peruse bounty about it any a wide range of books. In Sartre’s story he fundamentally expresses that the counter Semite needed to have somebody who he can feel predominant to, which is the reason he expresses that is the Jew didn't exist the counter Semite would make him. He expresses that if by some marvel the entirety of the Jews were eliminated as the counter Semite wishes that the counter Semite would be in solitude, he would lose his feeling of rights over the nation in light of the fact that there would never again be anybody to challenge them. He expresses that the counter Semite is in the troubled situation of having a fundamental requirement for the Jew he wishes to wreck. The counter Semite is somebody who needs a specific individual to abhor so as to feel better than somebody, and in the event that the entirety of the individuals that he loathed were abruptly gone, at that point he would no longer feel better than anybody since he would then have nobody to despise. Thus the counter Semite would then need to make something else to despise so as to bring back the sentiment of prevalence. This likewise was another of those perusing that you could tell was composed quite a while prior, in light of the way that we no longer observe these things close as much as we see saw them previously. Truly individuals do even now tent to look down on Jews yet it is as yet a specific gathering of individuals and not founded on a race that has a noteworthy disdain for another race. The counter Semite can be taken a gander at as a man that apprehensions just himself and needs to utilize that dread to make dread according to other so as to cause he to feel more grounded and less weak. How does Racism influence my life? I make an effort not to let bigotry influence my life, in my regular day to day existence I converse with and manage every single diverse sort of races. Presently I will say that as a white male I may have had a couple of entryways open to me that different races probably won't have had, however then again I decided to stroll through the entryways of the open doors I had so as to better myself. Individuals state that whites have had significantly greater chance and significantly more entryways open to them yet I truly don’t accept that it is as much obvious now as it was numerous years prior. I accept that we as a general public attempt to portray certain things as less shrewd than they truly are so we have something to talk, whine as well as quarrel over, yet truth be told we as a whole have certain entryways open to us it is simply an issue of whether we decided to step through the correct entryway or not. Individuals state that those of different races have had less open door than the individuals who are white however let’s investigate what is accessible now that benefits a greater amount of those in different races than the whites. There are significant universities that are race situated, there are numerous grants for schools that are race based and just that race can get that grant. As a white male yes I do have a great deal of chances to pick up work or addition cash for school through grants yet there isn't one thing have seen that is explicit to whites just with regards to instruction. Presently don’t misunderstand me I know numerous years prior no one but whites could go to class here in the U. S. also, it set aside some effort to give different races access to class however things have changed from that point forward. So I would need to state that presently, contrasted with in the event that I was brought into the world numerous years prior, I don't accept bigotry or race plays a major factor in my life.

A Puritan’s Response to Loss An analysis of Anne Bradstreet’s “Upon the Burning of Our House” - Literature Essay Samples

As a Puritan, Anne Bradstreet strove to live her life according to Calvinist doctrine while still having to cope with the struggles of her human condition (Mooney). When Bradstreet’s house burned down, she was struck with the reality of life’s hardships and presented with an opportunity to do one of two things. If she were to yield to her humanity and allow herself to be overcome by the loss of her worldly wealth, she could then blame God and turn away from Him. If she were to let her soul win out over that humanity, she could embrace the Puritan belief that God is still good and that she has a greater treasure waiting for her in heaven. In this she could draw closer to God, having learned to let go of her worldly possessions. Bradstreet struggles within herself for a time, but in the end she is able to arrive at a place where she accepts the loss of her material belongings and has her sights re-aligned on what truly matters – her relationship with God.When Brads treet realized that her house was on fire, her first response was to immediately cry out to God the moment she first saw the flames when she said, â€Å"I, starting up, the light did spy, / And to my God my heart did cry† (Bradstreet ll. 7-8). The thought of blaming or being angry with God seems to not even enter her mind. She immediately recognizes God’s sovereignty and the fact that there is no possible way she can survive this tragedy without His strength. She begs God to â€Å"strengthen [her] in [her] distress / And not to leave [her] succorless† (â€Å"Burning† 9-10). Bradstreet is frightened, as any human being would be in this situation – whether she was a Puritan or not – but the importance of this circumstance is how Bradstreet responded to that fear. It is evident from the beginning that she is a faithful follower of God in that she instinctually cries out to Him, even in the midst of this horrible and unexpected tragedy. Soon aft er her outcry of fear and uncertainty, Bradstreet seems to calm a bit and she begins to even praise God, saying, â€Å"I blest his name that gave and took† (â€Å"Burning† 14). Bradstreet demonstrates great trust in God from the moment she first saw the flames, and in this it is apparent that she genuinely believes in Puritan doctrine. She was not angry with God in the slightest, because she acknowledges that everything she owned â€Å"was His own, it was not [hers]† (â€Å"Burning† 17). In this, Bradstreet is even thankful because God did not take everything, but left her with her family and enough to still survive. She asserts He could have taken any amount of her belongings and she still would not have been angry with Him, because it would be His right to take whatever he saw fit (â€Å"Burning† 19-20). After line 20, however, the tone changes again from her faithful, hopeful optimism to sense of strong lamentation.Bradstreet describes walking b y her old house and being reminded of the sting of loss she experienced in the fire (â€Å"Burning† 21-22). Though she knows as a believer in God that those things should hold little value, she admits she still struggles daily with the sadness she feels over losing them. She seems much less convicted about God’s goodness at this point, thought she doesn’t come right out and say that. The reasons she gave to still praise God and be joyous in the beginning seem to bring her much less comfort now as she stands face-to-face with the physical loss she endured. Bradstreet shows the extreme difficulty she is experiencing in letting go of her worldly possessions as she describes in detailed pathos everything she misses so dearly about that house (Mooney). She speaks of a wide range of earthly treasure she regrets losing, from the emotional wealth of laughter and entertaining guests, to her material wealth, or her â€Å"pleasant things† (â€Å"Burning† 23-3 6). In the midst of her dolefulness, however, she seems to snap back to her senses and to the reality of what she knows her outlook on life and the human condition should be as a Puritan. Bradstreet begins to reprimand herself for holding her earthly belongings in such high value. Her inner battle is made evident when she angrily asks herself: And did thy wealth on earth abide? Didst fix thy hope on mold’ring dust? The arm of flesh didst make thy trust? (â€Å"Burning† 38-40)She knows she should not consider any treasure greater than hers in heaven, and she seems frustrated with herself for having such difficulty letting go of what she lost in the fire. Then she begins to think about what truly matters to her, telling herself to â€Å"rise up [her] thoughts above the sky† (â€Å"Burning†41). After this encouraging word to herself, Bradstreet seems to switch her perspective as she turns back to talking about God and what he has blessed her with. Bradstreet is joyous again, refocusing on what she has in God: Thou hast an house on high erect, Framed by that mighty Architect, With glory richly furnished, Stands permanent though this be fled. (â€Å"Burning† 43-46)It is obvious at this point how superior she feels her heavenly wealth is to the material possessions she lost in the fire. It seems Bradstreet now realizes the worth and purpose of this seemingly tragic incident – that she take her focus off the â€Å"dunghill mists [which] away may fly† (â€Å"Burning† 42) and re-align her sights on her heavenly treasure. It seems at this point in her poem, Bradstreet is experiencing a revelation that she did not need the things she lost in the fire, because her Lord, the â€Å"mighty Architect† (â€Å"Burning† 44), has prepared for her a treasure infinitely more valuable in heaven, and â€Å"there’s wealth enough, [she] needs no more† (â€Å"Burning† 43-51).Bradstreet’ s poem depicts the vivid contrast between worldly and heavenly treasure, while also illustrating the trouble a depraved human being has letting go of worldly riches. She admits she had put too much hope and invested too much time in her earthly wealth, and then a disaster struck that swept it all away. She knows she does not have to morn the loss of those things, because they were only meant to be temporary, and though it may be hard to say goodbye to her â€Å"pelf†¦[and]†¦store† (â€Å"Burning† 52), she knows that is what God wants her to learn to do. Bradstreet seems to acknowledge that the fire was ordained by God’s hand, yet she does not consider herself unjustly treated and she does not feel angry or bitter at Him for it. In fact, it seems Bradstreet considers the fire as a blessed sign from God, warning her of the value she had placed on her material belongings, and saving her from continuing to do so. Bradstreet is suddenly very much aware of t he fact that the treasure one possesses on earth is temporary and unstable (â€Å"Burning† 52). In understanding this, Bradstreet is reminded of the one treasure that is not temporary, but eternal. The one eternal treasure that is valued far above any such trash one can find on earth is that of the treasure one stores up in heaven and is promised by God. Bradstreet expresses gratitude in her poem to God when she realizes the gift of immeasurable value he has bestowed upon her. Suddenly, she has no need for earthly treasure, which has dimmed tremendously in comparison with that which the Lord offers. She is finally able to let go of what she lost, as she says:Farewell, my pelf, farewell my store. The world no longer let me love, My hope and treasure lies above. (â€Å"Burning† 52-54)

The Crucible Of Life By Timothy Crutcher - 1022 Words

The Crucible of Life, by Timothy Crutcher, is a book that explains: the interrelationship of theological method and religious epistemology, the function of experience as an authority, the specific epistemological grounds, and the usefulness today of John Wesley’s theological method (17). The book begins by explaining an important distinction in Wesley’s usage of the word experience in comparison to our contemporary common use of the word. That is, Wesley uses the word experience to describe an outward, active process rather than a subjective and passive interpretation (23). Furthermore, it is noted that Wesley should not be assumed to be a Lockean philosopher due to his variety of philosophical roots (25). Then, the book explains in†¦show more content†¦In other words, subjective experience offers no grounds to be tested against in Wesley’s view (82). Then, the authority of scripture and its a priori usage is presented. Scripture provides a positive a pr iori, which is information that is useful when approaching new experiences (98) and negative a priori, which is that which provides boundaries to our understandings (102). Furthermore, our interpretation of scripture is monitored by reason. Reason (as logic) is necessary for a correct interpretation of scripture to Wesley (110). Without it, we would be unable to acquire tools for proper interpretation of scripture. In addition, reason may only be utilized when provided with experience (115). However, experience, at times, can exceed that which reason has the power to evaluate (117). And so, when reason is unable to be utilized to evaluate a particular experience, the hermeneutical process between reason and experience becomes useful. We can evaluate our experiences via reason continually until our experiences eventually point in a direction that can, perhaps, issue analyzable knowledge on issues that were, at first, merely subjective (120). If an experience never arises in an object ive, rather than subjective, way throughout the hermeneutical, then Wesley admits that not even his concept of â€Å"spiritual senses† can resolve the issue and the experience

A critical view of the activities carried in the study to explain the social, economic and political effect of colonialism, and a qualitative of the growth rate of the West Africa countries were examined. These will be done by comparing the effects†¦show more content†¦Olsson (2009) used a temporal approach to analyse the impact of Western colonialism on contemporary levels of democracy using a new data set with dates of colonization, independence, and a colonizing event for all former colonies and dependencies that are regarded as countries today (143 observations). His result in conformity with existing literature divulge that the very heterogeneous era of colonization should be divided into an early ‘mercantilist’ wave and a much later ‘imperialist’ wave with quite different characteristics, which implicates a strong positive effect of colonial duration on democracy, an effect which turns out to be driven primarily by former British colonies and by countries colonized during the imperialist era. Angeles (2007) empirically investigates the link between income inequality and colonization across countries using a comprehensive data set of 139 countries. He noted that the differences in countries income can majorly be explained by colonialism and income inequality has been higher in the colonies where the percentage of European settlers to total population was higher, as long as Europeans remained a minority. Changing Society as a Whole in Stubblefield and Keanes...

When one thinks about educational opportunities, it is most likely schoolhouse, college, and even university settings that may come to mind. As Stubblefield and Keane (1994) point out in Adult Education in the American Experience (Stubblefield Keane, 1994), â€Å"provisions for educating adults, however, did not take shape around a single institutional form† (p. 1). Throughout the first two parts of their 1994 book Adult Education in the American Experience: From the Colonial to the Present, Stubblefield and Keane introduced many prominent patterns pertaining to the field of adult education. Apprenticeships typical ly allowed for the learner to live right with the teacher and for a set of mutual obligations to be completed as set forth in a contract. Stubblefield and Keane compare the colonial apprenticeships to similar apprenticeship programs in England saying â€Å"colonial apprenticeship copied many of the English patterns†¦its integration with general education and its accessibility was probably superior to the original English form† (p. 35). White colonialists were not the only ones that benefited from apprenticeships; ‘the institution of apprenticeships†¦Ã¢â‚¬â„¢often served as a step toward freedom’ for African Americans† (p. 38). Alongside apprenticeships came evening schools which were â€Å"typically private ventures†¦ with elementary courses in reading, writing, and arithmetic† (p. 39). These schools were adequately named, as they were most often held in the evening, with many students working during the daytime. Evening schools may have had their start in the mid-1600’s, but the idea’s basis of having school at night is still around today. Throughout the rest of the first two parts of their book, Stubblefield and Keane analyze the ways in which different communities, and races, used

6 Reasons You're Having Problems Concentrating There are many reasons why your mind might wander. Some of the most common factors are non-medical and can be treated by making small changes in your routine. 1. Fatigue Fatigue from sleep deprivation is the most common cause of an inability to concentrate on one topic for a long time. Many studies have shown that people are not getting enough sleep, and sleep deprivation have serious physical, emotional, and cognitive effects. The first step in attempting to solve your concentration problem is finding a way to get at least eight hours of sleep every night. This isnt easy to do. We have busy lives and develop habits that make it difficult to get to sleep early enough. However, if you have a severe concentration problem, you may need to make some sacrifices to find a solution. Try getting plenty of sleep and see if you get results. 2. Anxiety Anxiety can cause the inability to concentrate too. Are you worried about something? If so, you might need to isolate your source of anxiety and confront it head-on. We deal with many pressures from our peers, and this social force can become quite damaging in extremes. Are you dealing with pressure? If so, it may be time to change your life to eliminate some of the stressors. Is your schedule too heavy? Are you involved in a toxic friendship? Is something else bothering you? If you are dealing with some pressure that might lead you down a dangerous path, it might be time to get a second opinion from someone. You can talk to a parent, a doctor, a guidance counselor, a co-worker, or a teacher. Depending on the situation, your emergency contact might be different. Find people you trust and let them know that youre dealing with anxiety and would like some support. 3. Excitement Excitement is related to anxiety, but a little more fun! There are lots of things that come along from time to time that grab our attention and make us daydream. This can be a big problem when weve got to pay attention to something! Make the conscious decision to set aside your daydreams until after class. 4. Love A big distraction is a physical attraction or being in  love. Are you having a difficult time concentrating because you cant get someone out of your head? If so, you need to find a way to discipline yourself. It is sometimes helpful to establish healthy routines in your habits by setting up parameters both inside and outside your head. Outwardly, you can establish a physical space and a concentration time. Inwardly, you can set rules about thoughts that are and are not permissible during concentration time. 5. Diet and Caffeine Your diet and, for those who drink coffee, consumption of caffeine, are other potential problems when it comes to concentration. Your body is just like a machine in some ways. Just like an automobile, a body needs clean fuel to keep it running well. Different people are affected in different ways from foods and chemicals-and sometimes those effects can be unexpected. For example, it may surprise you to know that some studies have linked low-fat diet with symptoms of depression! And depression can affect your concentration. Caffeine is another potential trouble-maker when it comes to diet and moods. Caffeine consumption can cause insomnia, headaches, dizziness, and nervousness. These symptoms are sure to affect your concentration. 6. Boredom Boredom is another big culprit when it comes to staying focused on your studies. Boredom stems from doing something that lacks meaning and motivation. What can you do? Every time you prepare to enter a study environment, take a moment for a reality check. What do you need to accomplish? Why? Concentrate on a goal for the next hour and think of a way to reward yourself for reaching that goal.

Wishes to Write on a Chinese New Year Lantern Chinese New Year includes two weeks of celebration with most activities taking place on just three days: New Years Eve, New Years Day, and Lantern Festival, which is celebrated on the last day of Chinese New Year. Heres what you should know about the Lantern Festival, including the symbolism of the celebration and which characters to write on your own lantern to wish in Chinese. What Is the Chinese New Year Lantern Festival? Every year, on the last day of Chinese New Year, families from Taiwan to China place colorful lanterns outside their homes and launch them into the night sky. Each lantern corresponds to a particular wish the family has for the new year, with the colors  having various meanings. For example, sending off a red lantern represents a wish for good fortune, while orange symbolizes money and white symbolizes good health. There are many stories about why this festival takes places. For example, in one of the origin legends, Emperor Qinshihuang, the first emperor to unite China, held the first Lantern Festival to ask Taiyi, the ancient god of heaven, for health and good weather. In another of these legends, which is rooted in Taoism, the Lantern Festival was first put on to celebrate the birthday of Tianguan, the god of good fortune. Other explanations center around the Jade Emperor, and a maid named Yuan Xiao. Wish in Chinese: What to Write on Your Lantern The festival has changed a lot over the years. Simple handheld paper lanterns have been replaced with elaborate  colorful lanterns of all shapes and sizes. But the tradition of sending wishes to be granted into the sky has remained. Many revelers enjoy writing riddles or wishes on the lanterns before sending them airborne. Here are some examples of what you may want to write on your own lantern, include the Chinese symbols and pronunciation. The great Chicago fire Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words

The great Chicago fire - Research Paper Example Will Chicago be able to return her royal title of the â€Å"Queen of the West†? The Great Chicago Fire "It was like a snowstorm only the flakes were red instead of white." Bessie Bradwell Helmer 1. Chicago started as a small settlement and grew to a very populated city during XIX. The population of Chicago had burst from approximately 4,000 souls when it received its first city charter in 1837, to 30,000 in 1850 and to an amazing 330,000 at 1871. It had passed  Saint Louis  as the fourth-biggest city in America and became a key player on the international scene. Modern for those days highly-branched railroad was a very important element of Chicago city. No American city was linked to the romance of the railroad the way Chicago was. It resembled imperial European centers – Paris, for instance – where the stations, like the points of a gigantic compass, beckoned in all directions†¦ It was the railroad that made Chicago the capital of America’s heart land, its attainable metropolis, its possible dream. (Lowe, 2010, p.51). 2. This fast increase city growth, though, happened with little planning. Several brick-and-mortar constructions were already built, but thousands of buildings were factually â€Å"thrown up† to house the enormous flood of European immigrants. There, next to rich houses was built squatter settlement where buildings often were put up very close to each other, back-to-back. The growth of the city was so speedy and similar to the fast growing bones of a teenager, which often might be subject to easy breaking. The expansion of Chicago was far from being ideal and faultless. There were class conflicts, business upheavals and urban rivalry which became common in American cities. 3. On Sunday October 8th 1871 around 9 o’clock in the evening in the small barn owned by Patrick and  Catherine O'Leary, that was on 137  DeKoven Street, the fire started. Nobody knew for certain what caused it. The investig ation by the Board of Police and Fire Commissioners has never before been fully researched and reported by the fire historians. The Board’s final report published in Chicago newspapers on December 12, 1871, indicated that the commissioners were unable to determine the fire cause.† (Bales and Schwartz, 2005, p.4) 4. There were number of equally possible stories, from the owner’s cow kicking over the lantern to meteor shower which possibly caused 3 other fires in the same area simultaneously. 5. According to Owens (2007), â€Å"The Chicago fire started in the O’Leary barn but the O’Leary Home survived.† (p.8) 6. However, many historians nowadays believe that the true culprit of the fire was Daniel Sullivan, the one who told O’Learys about the fire. They accepted as truth his story that he got inside the barn to steal their cows’ milk. Prior to his death, Daniel Sullivan admitted that he was accountable. There are some indications confirming it is true, yet it is not certain. A.T. Andreas, nineteenth-century historian wrote: "Nature had withheld her accustomed measure of prevention, and man had added to the peril by recklessness." The fire spread very fast due to the draught for fourteen weeks, multiplicity of wooden houses, jacked-up plank streets and sidewalks and powerful southwestern wind. It was similar to hundreds of matchboxes set close

Electronic Media And Youth Violence

Electronic Media And Youth Violence Electronic media has forgotten Ethics and Social values, revision of media suitable for viewers through recommendations for producers and censor board. Media needs to be aware of the effects caused by their negligence and the inactive censor board. Nudity and violent footages, dramas and soaps exploiting and distracting the youth, scenes containing smoking and drinking shots, spreading wrong news before time and usage of copyrighted footage without permission should be stopped. One whole generation of the world is learning from electronic media and has learnt entirely immoral and incorrect information. This needs to be prevented in order to save next generations. Recommendations are given by interviewing executive producers, censor board executives and other directors. Executive Summary Electronic media has forgotten Ethics and Social values, revision of media suitable for viewers through recommendations for producers and censor board. Youth is easily deceived, because it is quick to hope. Aristotle The youth is getting the wrong path by the use of this E-Media. Our main aim is to protect our youth from the dangerous effects of E-Media. In E-media we will target specifically the TV media which is accessible by the whole family especially the youth. Further in youth TV is mostly watched by the women of the family. These effects are either caused intentionally or by the negligence of E-media personals. Intentional effects are either for the promotion of their channels. The E-Media personals are displaying the unethical dramas, either the stories are distracting the youth or the scenes of the drama are disturbing and unethical. They provoke the female and male relationships which are considered unethical in our society. Most of the dramas and soaps are based on love stories and relations of married women with young guys. Some TV shows are provoking aggressiveness in our youth. We will mention a program of ARY MUSIK named LIVING ON THE EDGE. This program consists of unethical, immoral and non islamic dares given to the youth of Pakistan. That is done to provoke aggressiveness and to bring our youth to the level of the unethical youths of western countries. He is trying to copy the programs like FEAR FACTOR, RHOADIES etc. Similarly the E-Media personals are provoking nudity. Either that nudity is in full form or half nudity. We use the term half nudity for the scenes in which women or men are wearing inislamic clothes. Wearing sleeveless, wearing Capri, uncovered hair, uncovered belly etc is completely inislamic. Hereby we will mention some channels that have bought the licenses of western movie channels and are showing scenes containing kisses and some other unethical scenes. Channels are ARY DIGITAL who has recently bought license of HBO. Plus there are our cable operators who are showing unethical channels at midnight and at day time. Research methodology is based on interviews and questionnaire. Interviews are conducted from the media personals which include producers, directors, editors and executive producers of different TV channels. And questionnaires are floated among general public to gather their views about todays E-Media. Majority of the people have opposed medias current role. They want it to be made better by some central body. They want the media to be unbiased, responsible and correct. More entertainment channels should be introduced and number of news channels should be decreased as they are creating hypertension. Infotainment quota should be increased. Programs provoking aggression should be banned. Media should not be biased. Producers should show the real culture of our society. Channels should register their ratings. Channel owners involved in unethical and immoral airing should be penalized. Censor board should be made active. Censor board should penalize the parties distracting the youth. Censor board should take strict notice of the cable operators. E-Media is a very important sector of Pakistan. Along with the advantages of E-Media there are many disadvantages. These disadvantages should be eliminated and E-Media should be utilized to its best. Pakistans E-Media has all the capacity to be among the best. Hence everything is up to censor board. It should be made active and should be given the authority of penalizing and banning. It should take a serious notice of all the activities carried out by the E-media personals. INTRODUCTION Electronic Media Electronic media are that utilize electronics or electromechanical energy for the end user (audience) to access the content. This is in contrast to static media (mainly print media), which are most often created electronically, but dont require electronics to be accessed by the end user in the printed form. The primary electronic media sources familiar to the general public are better known as video recordings, audio recordings, multimedia presentations, slide presentations, CD-ROM and Online Content. Most new media are in the form of digital media. However, electronic media may be in either analog or digital format. Devices such as televisions, computers and cd-roms that make information available to people. Importance In October 2003, the British humanitarian organization Christian Aid released a report that $4 billion in Iraqi funds, which had been earmarked for reconstruction of the country, had disappeared. The Coalition Provision Authority (CPA), the U.S. controlled body that ruled Iraq at the time, was relegated with handling that money. An examination of financial records between June 2003 and October 2004 showed poor bookkeeping and investigators found indicators of potential fraud, the report said At the time, the CPA vigorously denied the accusations. By June 2004, the amount of money gone missing had more than doubled from four to almost nine billion dollars. This story was reported with minimal coverage when the announcement was first released. As the investigation progressed, the story of the missing billions was reported several times during the summer months of 2004 and again in January 2005. However, it was never given prominence in any news medium. The writers at Faithful Progressive called it the biggest and single most under-reported story of the last year. News Media and Democracy In a democracy an informed public is of critical importance. In matters regarding the self-interests of the citizenry and of the nation as a whole, knowledge is key in making decisions regarding participation in the process of democracy. Indeed, failing to report important news, or reporting news shallowly, inaccurately, or unfairly can leave people dangerously uninformed. The mass media of today has tremendous power within society. What and how information is distributed can have indelible consequences for individuals and society as a whole. As such, control of media outlets is regarded as a valued form of property for those seeking political or economic power. Among other sources of power, it is important to note that mass media has the ability to: attract and direct attention to problems, solutions, or people that can favor those with power; it can confer status and confirm legitimacy; it can be a channel for persuasion and mobilization (Graber, 33). This represents an incredible amount of power, and over the past twenty years or so, people have taken control over these outlets for the sole purpose of attaining both political and economic power. International In the United States, there are three twenty-four hour news networks. President Bill Clinton stated it well in a response to the question of the condition of todays media. He stated, The thing I worry about most is that people will have all the information in the world but wont have any way of evaluating itThats what I consider to be the most significant challenge presented to all of you by the explosion of media outlets in the Information Age. COMPARISON WITH PRINT MEDIA Illiteracy According to United Nations report Pakistan has 55% literacy rate. This makes it 160th country in world. Because of low literacy rate people cannot read the printed news. This gives an edge to electronic media over print media. Media of future Electronic Media has a clear edge over print media even if new media (for eg. The Internet) is not included in it. Print media is more of a habit with people and still caters to a sizeable population. But electronic media offers a lot of choice to the people, especially to the youth (GEN Y), the largest growing segment of our population and more importantly, has the ability to maintain the pace at which the preferences and demands of the Gen Y changes. The shrinking readership of the print publications perhaps is testimony to the changing media consumption pattern of the people today. Although we dont see an immediate threat to the print media, more so because it is a centuries old media, yet we believe it definitely is not the media of the future. Moreover, electronic media is visually more appealing and more effective in not only conveying a message but by virtue of being a frequency medium, is also effective in registering it, thus ensuring high brand recall amongst viewers poten tial customers. For the advertisers and advertising agencies, it provides exciting opportunities to experiment with new and innovative ideas which reduces the medias dependence on traditional source Which is best? It depends on which area you are in. In rural areas, where there is no technology, print is better, but for the urban areas, electronic media are the best. Print media was supposed to have died 10 years ago, but that has not happened. In terms of mobility and cost print media is better than electronic media. But in terms of speed, coverage and reliability, electronic media are the best. Newspaper is no longer essential, while attending the usual morning business, in the toilet. Laptop is the in thing; one can browse as many e-papers as desired. IDENTIFICATION OF THE PROBLEM New technology has many social and educational benefits but caregivers and educators have expressed concern about the dangers young people can be exposed to through these technologies. To respond to this concern, some states and school districts have, for example, established policies about the use of cell phones on school grounds and developed policies to block access to certain websites on school computers. Many teachers and caregivers have taken action individually by spot-checking websites used by young people, such as FACEBOOK, YOUTUBE. This brief focuses on the phenomena of electronic aggression: any kind of aggression perpetrated through technology-any type of harassment or bullying (teasing, telling lies, making fun of someone, making rude or mean comments, spreading rumors, or making threatening or aggressive comments) that occurs through email, a chat room, instant messaging, a website (including blogs), or text messaging. Channels are ARY DIGITAL who has recently bought license of HBO. Plus there are our cable operators who are showing unethical channels at midnight and at day time. Smoking scenes also provoke the drug addiction in youth. Previously the ads of cigarettes were banned in order to decrease the percentage of people converting to addiction. But now these smoking scenes are consistently being shown in many dramas and shows. When a youngster watches his favorite actor smoking in a TV drama and performing stunts or having lots of girlfriends because of that cigarette then that youngster follows him. Same is the case with scenes containing alcohol and beer. Violent footages are also disturbing for the youth. We see many Indian movies which are showing scenes of fights which are followed by the youngsters. Same is happening here these days all the boys are found to be fighting with each other. They think they are living in their ideal movie and they are the heroes. Wrestling and cartoons are watched by the children and they try to implement that in their real life often damaging either themselves or some other member of family. SIGNIFICANCE OF THE PROBLEM Before examining the state of the news media in todays society, it is important to define what good reporting of news should be. Doris A. Graber, in her book Media Power in Politics, thinks it important to distinguish between news and truth. The function of news is to signalize an event. The function of truth is to bring to light the hidden facts, to set them into relation with each other, and make a picture of reality upon which men can act (Graber, 41). News dissemination, whether through radio broadcast, newspaper articles, or a web site posting, should perform both functions in order to truly inform. Good news can affect society in positive ways. Determined, sweeping coverage of important topics can improve local communities, rid government of improper public officials, save lives, and so many other things. Reporting events and uncovering truths is critical for the news media to perform its function. Media is the pillar of a society. Television is a vital source from which most people receive information. News and media delegates on television have abused their powers over society through the airing of appealing news shows that misinform the public. Through literary research and experimentation, it has been proven that peoples perception of reality has been altered by the information they receive from such programs. Manipulation, misinterpretation, word arrangement, picture placement and timing are all factors and tricks that play a major role in the case. Research, experimentation, and actual media coverage has pinpointed actual methods used for deceptive advertising. Television influences society in many ways. People are easily swayed to accept a belief that they may not normally have unless expressed on television, since many people think that everything they hear on television is true. This, however, is not always the case. It has been observed that over the past twenty to th irty years, normal social behavior, even actual life roles of men and women and media, regulatory policies have all been altered. Media has changed with time, along with quality and respectability. Many people receive and accept false information that is merely used as an attention grabber that better the shows ratings and popularity. This involves sensationalizing a story to make it more interesting, therefore increasing the interest of the audience. People often know that these shows aim to deceive them, but still accept the information as truth. The E-media has severely damaged our youth and provided them with altered and incorrect information. Thus one whole youth of Pakistan is having incorrect information and has inaccurate knowledge which not only is damage for them but for the whole generations which are to come. Following quotes represent the significance of youth; Youth is the trustee of prosperity. Benjamin Disraeli Almost everything that is great has been done by youth. Benjamin Disraeli RESEARCH METHODOLOGY TO BE USED Research methodology is based on interviews and questionnaire. Interviews are conducted from the media personals which include producers, directors, editors and executive producers of different TV channels.
